Is it possible to self publish a book without any upfront payments for publishing and marketing services?

sure, i self-published a book through lulu.com
they are completly free.
after you have published, and at any point in the future, you can buy an isbn, or marketing services.
You keep all rights to the book.

As far as i know, lulu are one of the only self-publishers that dont make you pay.

Not advisable. If your book is good enough for acceptance by any publisher, you must get paid for it and ensure that you are paid royalty. You may self publish if you are a professional authority on the subject you are writing, otherwise you may end up bankrupt.
